What should I avoid while taking Aldactone (Spironolactone)?

Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of spironolactone. Tell your doctor if you regularly use other medicines that make you feel light-headed (such as cold medicine or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety) . They can add to the side effects of spironolactone. Do not use salt substitutes or milk products in low-potassium-containing salt. These products can cause potassium levels in the blood get too high while you are taking spironolactone.

Avoid high-salt diet. Too much salt will cause your body to retain water and can reduce the effectiveness of this medicine.

Spironolactone can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.

In studies of chronic administration in rats showed that spironolactone causes tumors when administered in high doses (5 to 250 times greater than normal human daily dose mg/ml- -2). No tumors were observed in monkeys treated daily with doses up to 52 weeks. Not clearly established the relevance of these findings for clinical application of spironolactone.

However, it is possible that the effects in rats are secondary to the induction of hepatic enzymes P-450 responsible for metabolism in this species.

Spironolactone did not exert teratogenic effects in mice. Rabbits treated with spironolactone showed reduced conception rate, increased resorption rate and a reduction in the number of live products. No embryotoxic effects were observed in rats treated with high doses, but limited hypoprolactinaemia reported dose-related and weight reduction of the ventral prostate and seminal vesicles in males and increased luteinizing hormone secretion and weight of the ovaries and uterus in females. In another study in rats was reported feminization of external genitalia in the male fetus.
