Possible Side Effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medication and call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects:
- numbness or tingling;
- muscle pain or weakness;
- slow heartbeat, fast or irregular;
- numbness, anxiety, or dizziness;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- shallow breathing;
- tremors, confusion, or
- nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
The less serious side effects may include:
- mild nausea, loss of appetite
- dizziness, headache
- gas, stomach pain
- Skin rash.

Side effects associated with spironolactone include an increased risk of bleeding in the stomach and duodenum, although no causal relationship was found between the use of this drug and these effects. Because it also affects steroid receptors in the body, it can cause gynecomastia, menstrual irregularities and testicular atrophy. Other adverse effects include ataxia, erectile dysfunction, drowsiness and rash on the skin. It has been found a carcinogenic effect in experimental rats. Spironolactone tends to be immunosuppressive in the treatment of sarcoidosis. Those taking spironolactone should avoid taking salt substitutes containing potassium table.
